Voice of Democracy Winners Announced

November 24, 2015

This November, the Palisade Veterans of Foreign War ( VFW) sponsored the WP High School students in the annual Voice of Democracy essay contest.

Each Wauneta-Palisade High School student wrote an essay, recorded it on an audio CD, and submitted their work to the local VFW for judging. This year's topic was, "My Vision for America".

Each year, nearly 40,000 high school students from across the country enter the Voice of Democracy essay contest. The contest was established in 1947 to give high school students the opportunity tto express themselves in regards to democratic ideas and principles. Students that enter have the opportunity to win a share of the $2 million in educational scholarships and incentives, according to the VFW website.

The national first-place winner receives a $30,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school. Other national scholarships range from $1,000-$16,000, and the first-place winner from each state wins a minimum scholarship of $1,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. in March 2016.

The WP Winner for the 2015-2016 essay contest is Emily Day. Second place went to Ellie Lee, and Chase Rathe received third place. Emily's essay has been sent on to the District competition. Good job, Broncos, and good luck Emily!
